Fast-Packing is being able to cover more distance than traditional Backpacking techniques. The major aim is to decrease the weight carried on the trail; by decreasing the weight carried you can move further in less time, put less stress on your body, and enjoy the experience more.
Fast-packers can move 3-4 mph and in sum cases mix this with a slow paced run and cover 25-30 miles per day [depending on the individual] taking less breaks due to lighter loads, enjoying multiple day trips out on the trail and carrying everything you need to survive - it's the ultimate adventure holiday.
Essential Gear
Apart from your normal running kit that normally comprises of a good pair of low profile off road running shoes, base layer, shorts and tights you will need:
A strong, lightweight backpack with a capacity of around 25-35 litres. I recommend the Osprey Talon 33 as it is comfortable, strong and has good drinks-bladder storage but there are a number of good alternatives on the market.
A lightweight sleeping bag. I use the Rab Quantum 250 and ultra lightweight down bag designed to pack small and weighs in at 630g, you can go lighter but the price of this bag is a snip for the quality your getting. You can also include a sleeping matt, but again that's optional depending on how comfy you like to be.
A Bivi or one-man tent. This is more of a personal choice, some people like the extra space a tent provides whereas others like the simplicity of a Bivi. I have both but typically use the Terra Nova single hoop Jupiter Bivi. After fast-packing miles, when you're tired and don't want to be messing around with putting up a tent, the Jupiter is a simple, great little bag that can be put up in seconds - No fuss!
A Head Torch. I use the Petzl Myo RXP and it's never let me down, again there are plenty on the market.
